The main research focus of the laboratory is the understanding of the processes inside the Earth by creating algorithms, collecting data and building seismic models. Identification of the geological scenarios for various structures is an important task that will help in solving many scientific and applied problems, such as mineral exploration, engineering applications, identifying sources of volcanic activation, understanding the mechanisms behind the emergence of mountains and valleys.

The key goals of the laboratory

1. Developing algorithms for constructing seismic images with wide range of practical implications. The development of algorithms for seismic tomography is done in the following areas:

  •  Developing new algorithms to recover the parameters of seismic anisotropy for the body waves in passive and active 2D- and 3D- research;
  •  Using the data on attenuation of seismic waves when performing the tomographic inversion. This approach is applied to the available data for studying volcanoes, and for some objects of exploratory Geophysics (salt domes, coal formations, fault zones);
  •  Developing algorithms for the study of spatial distribution of seismic emission, mainly for the study of volcanoes;
  •  Applying the modern algorithms based on the use of receiver functions method to explore the deep boundaries;
  •  Developing and applying algorithms for tomography based on the use of surface waves. To obtain the characteristics of surface waves, the data on earthquakes, as well as the correlation of natural noise is used;
  •  Developing custom algorithms in seismic tomography, which can be used by different stakeholders to perform various tasks in applied and fundamental research.
2. Obtaining seismic data during field experiments in the key regions of Russia in terms of tectonics.

  •  Russia has many geologically unique sites which attract attention of the global scientific community (Kamchatka, the Kuril Islands, the Caucasus, the Arctic, etc.). However due to a number of reasons many of these sites remain poorly understood. *Conducting the laboratory expeditions and obtaining actual seismic data in poorly explored regions of Russia is an urgent task.
  •  We organize regular expeditions to the volcanoes of Kamchatka. The fieldwork is conducted in close cooperation with Russian and foreign organizations.
3. Applying seismic tomography algorithms to the processing of real data for various surveillance systems with the purpose of studying geological objects at a wide range of scales (from meters to thousands of kilometers), and its interpretation for solving various applied and fundamental problems.

  • The world has accumulated huge amount of factual seismological material, and big part of this material is openly accessible. Many data sources relate to the sites and objects extremely interesting from the geological point of view. The use of new technologies to process these data will significantly improve the quality of seismic models, which is an urgent task for the study of various geological objects.
